The private sector provisions of the Privacy Act centre around 10 "National Privacy Principles" which set out how most private sector organisations should collect, use, keep secure and disclose personal information. The principles give individuals a right to know what information an organisation holds about them and a right to correct that information if it is wrong.
Office of the New South Wales Privacy Commissioner
Some small businesses are exempt from the Federal Privacy Act 1988. It is the policy of NSW Privacy Commissioner to take complaints about small businesses, but only after the Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner has advised the complainant in writing that they cannot take the complaint.
